2013 Specialty Exam Information

The 2013 Specialty Exam will be held in at the University of Illinois in Chicago July 9-11, 2013.

If you would like to request an application, they will be available after February 15, 2013. Please contact WREB at 602-944-3315 or via email at generalinfo@wreb.org.  Please be sure to include the specialty that you are inquiring about.

The seven specialty areas available are:

Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology
Pediatric Dentistry

These examinations are not designed to replace the specialty boards, but to qualify successful applicants to practice and to advertise themselves as specialists in the states participating in this specialty examination process.

The examination consists of two parts:

  1. A written multiple choice examination of 160 to 180 questions and
  2. Presentation of a series of cases completed by the candidate demonstrating specific treatment planning and technical skills.

Your completed cases and signed, notarized affidavit must be received no later than, Friday, May 3, 2013.

A score of 75% or better is required in both parts to pass. If you receive a passing score from the American Board in your specialty, the written part of the exam can be waived, as long as an original letter is sent directly from the Board, to WREB, showing successful completion.

  • If you are taking the written part of the American Board Exam but will not receive your scores until AFTER the WREB’s April 19 application/payment deadline, you need only to sign up and pay WREB for the WREB’s verbal part of the exam by April 19, 2013.  If you discover after the April 19 deadline that you failed the written part of the American Board exam, please notify Victoria DeLeon vdeleon@wreb.org immediately that you will be taking the written part of the NERB exam and send payment to the WREB, so that it is received no later than Friday, June 14, 2013.
